The author creates suspense in the first few sentences by presenting a conflicting statement. The narrator claims that the person in question was a good husband and father, but then immediately questions their belief in it. This creates a sense of uncertainty and tension for the reader, as they are left wondering what could have happened to make the narrator doubt their belief.Based on this opening, it is possible that something tragic or unexpected has occurred, causing the narrator to question their previous beliefs about the person. The mention of the person playing with the children and being gentle suggests that they were a loving and caring individual, which adds to the suspense as the reader wonders what could have changed to make the narrator doubt their belief in their goodness.
