4 Sometimes, it is not just a few teachers who see the benefit of smartphones in the classroom. Consider Katy 150 a large district near Houston, Texas, As reported in Schools Plug Into EYOO Mobile Devices Transform Learning at Katy ISD; in 2008 the Katy ISD Technology Department was faced with an impossible task to provide updated technology to its 63,000 students across its S6 campuses in the middle of an economic downturn that had affected a large portion of their educational budget. After a thorough research and development cycle, KOSO administrators created a three-year program that has become a model for smartphone implementation into the learning environment.Partnering with Cisco Systems, Katy ISD was able to lend 1500 Verizon-donated smartphones to their students in order to gauge student motivation and achievement in this new pilot program.This program was developed as a shift away from traditional and existing technology models such as creating more computer labs or purchasing outdated technology at a cheaper price. The districk-provided smartphones were known as "MLDs" or mobile learning devices and did not have texting or calling capabilities, only access to internet searches and learning applications alreadyloaded onto the phone. The results of MLD on student achievement were profound with some content areas seeing an almost 10 point increase on test scores from pre-device to post-device (see Table 1).
