## Step 1<br />The law of segregation, also known as Mendel's First Law, is a fundamental principle in genetics. It was proposed by Gregor Mendel, a 19th-century monk and scientist, who conducted experiments on pea plants to understand how traits are passed from parents to offspring.<br /><br />## Step 2<br />According to the law of segregation, each individual has two alleles for each trait, one inherited from each parent. These alleles segregate, or separate, during the formation of gametes (sperm or eggs).<br /><br />## Step 3<br />The law of segregation states that the segregation of alleles is random. This means that each gamete will receive one allele for each trait, but it is entirely by chance which allele it will be.<br /><br />## Step 4<br />The law of segregation does not imply that the process is determined or non-random. Instead, it emphasizes the randomness of the process.
