North Korea was communist. After World War II, Korea was divided into two separate countries: North Korea and South Korea. North Korea, officially known as the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK), adopted a communist government and was influenced by the Soviet Union. In contrast, South Korea, officially known as the Republic of Korea (ROK), adopted a capitalist government and was influenced by the United States. The division of Korea into North and South was a result of the geopolitical tensions of the Cold War.
