Voltaire veía la intolerancia como un problema porque creía que la tolerancia nunca había llevado a guerras civiles, mientras que la intolerancia había cubierto la tierra con sangre. En su opinión, el fanatismo era a la superstición lo que la delirio era a la fiebre, lo que la ira era a la locura.
