0. The attraction between the molecules is caused by the positive and negative portions of the atoms being attracted to each other. Use this information to explain why certain compounds are more or less attracted to each other than others (Hint: think about positive and negative sides of a magnet, also think how some metals are more attracted to a magnet)

The attraction between molecules is due to the positive and negative portions of the atoms being attracted to each other. This is similar to how a magnet has a north and south pole, with opposite poles attracting each other.

Certain compounds are more or less attracted to each other based on the distribution of positive and negative charges in their molecules. Compounds with a more even distribution of charges will have weaker intermolecular attractions, while compounds with a more uneven distribution of charges will have stronger intermolecular attractions.

For example, water (H2O) has a bent shape that allows the oxygen atom to have a partial negative charge and the hydrogen atoms to have partial positive charges. This uneven distribution of charges makes water molecules strongly attracted to each other.

On the other hand, methane (CH4) has a tetrahedral shape that evenly distributes the charge, resulting in weaker intermolecular attractions between methane molecules.

In terms of metals being attracted to a magnet, this is due to the alignment of the magnetic domains within the metal. Metals with a higher concentration of magnetic domains that align with the magnetic field will be more strongly attracted to the magnet.
