Stars form inside clouds of gas and dust, called nebulas. Nebulas are vast clouds of gas and dust that exist in space. Over time, the gravitational forces within these clouds cause the gas and dust to collapse and condense, forming a protostar. As the protostar continues to collapse and heat up, it eventually ignites, becoming a star. This process is known as stellar formation.
